Music x Psychology

Besides having rich experience in music, May Chan is also a registered clinical psychologist in Hong Kong. She is particularly fascinated by the synergy of music and psychology. Being proficient in two different disciplines has broadened her horizon - how music could be used positively to improve our quality of life, how psychological research could facilitate our singing performance and music composition – the topics for exploration has become so exciting and boundless.

Her expertise in psychology enables her to integrate new elements into vocal coaching – the appreciation of music being the “language of emotions”, and one needs to start observing one’s “heart” if we want to sing a song that “touches” the audience. Singing is a complicated activity that involves mind-body-soul connection. Besides working on the technical singing skills, managing one’s own psychological qualities is also an important skill to take care of. Not only it could help us improve our performance, it also could enable us to enjoy this invaluable gift from above, and connect with our inner self and the people around us in a deeper level.
